1. A Great Start to the new PhD Catalogue

The Odysseus Network is happy to announce the success of the recently launched catalogue on PhD projects & researchers. The aim of this catalogue is to create a platform for exchange in the area of migration and asylum (law in particular) between doctoral researchers, prospective PhD candidates and promoters.

The PhD Catalogue consists of 3 sub-catalogues: The main one gathers ongoing and concluded PhD research projects. The Prospective PhD Catalogue gathers information on projects of individuals willing to pursue a PhD. The last one is the PhD Opportunities Catalogue, wherein aspiring candidates can find information on PhD opportunities.

This catalogue is administered by the Odysseus Coordination Team and filled by submissions from the public. Therefore, your contribution is essential to make it a vivid and up-to-date tool.

2. 2019 Annual Conference on 20th anniversary of Tampere conclusions (Helsinki, 24 and 25 October)

The next Odysseus conference will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Tampere conclusions adopted by the European Council on 15/16 October 1999. An assessment of their degree of implementation will show that they have been a forward-looking text.

This landmark anniversary will provide an opportunity to brainstorm the possible priorities for the development of EU Migration and Asylum policies for the next five years at a time when a new Parliament and cabinet Commission will result from the European elections.

The conference will take place in Helsinki on 24/25 October 2019 and will be organized in cooperation with the Finnish national contact point for the European Migration Network and the Finnish Presidency of the EU.

3. Announcing the Odysseus Summer School 2019

The Odysseus Summer School will be celebrating its 19th edition from the 1st until the 12th of July 2019 at the Université libre de Bruxelles. Over the years the Summer School has been carefully designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of EU immigration and asylum policies from a legal perspective. More than one thousands people from different backgrounds have followed this programme since its creation.

In addition to the classes, the course provides an opportunity to spend an intellectually stimulating fortnight among a group of one hundred fellow participants specialised in immigration and asylum from all over Europe. The setting of the Summer School in Brussels, the home of the European institutions, creates a unique environment that facilitates participants’ deeper engagement with the institutions.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 2019 Odysseus Summer School!
More information will follow on our website in January.

4. Brexit and Migration: Odysseus members commissioned by Libe Committee of European Parliament to produce a report

Odysseus members Elspeth Guild and Tineke Strik from the Centre for Migration Law, of the Radboud University in Nijmegen have contributed their expertise to the publication of a report that analyses the future relationship between the UK and the EU on issues of borders, visas, migration, asylum, and the movement of persons.

The report focuses on issues surrounding the UK´s future participation in EU measures on migration and mobility; the rights of EU citizens and UK nationals to move between the EU and the UK, including family reunification; models for future cooperation between the EU and the UK for different categories of migrants; the applicability of CJEU case law and the jurisdiction of the CJEU; and recommendations for the future relationship regarding matters of migration such as cooperation, the Irish border, etc.
